Not professional advice
Our guides explain how garage doors, springs and cables, openers, tracks and hardware, seals and safety devices generally work and what homeowners and technicians commonly do. They are not a substitute for advice from a trained garage door technician, electrician, building inspector, insurance adjuster, the door or opener manufacturer or other qualified person who can see your door. Every door, opener and garage is different, and we cannot see yours. We do not inspect doors, estimate costs for a specific job or diagnose a particular failure.
Safety risks
- Springs and cables are dangerous. A garage door spring holds enough stored energy to cause serious injury or death if it is touched, tightened or released. Spring and cable repair, and releasing a door with a broken spring, belong to a trained technician. We do not explain how to do them.
- A garage door is heavy. A door that falls, a track that bends or a panel that lets go can crush. Keep people and pets clear, never put fingers in joints and never stand under a door that is moving or off track.
- Electricity and entrapment. Openers run on mains power. Have wiring and hardwired connections done by a licensed electrician, test the safety reversal regularly and, in an emergency, call your local emergency number.
- Products and tools need care. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and safety data for lubricants, cleaners, adhesives and equipment, and never run a car engine in a closed garage.
Codes, permits and local rules
Building codes, permit requirements, wind-load rules and homeowners association rules differ by state, county, city and neighborhood, and change over time. Always follow your local requirements and your product manufacturer’s installation instructions, which take priority over anything on this Site.
