About

A garage door is the biggest moving part of most houses, and you use it several times a day without thinking about it. Then it shudders, gets loud, stops halfway, reverses on its own or refuses to open, and a quote arrives for work you cannot judge. Most of the time the cause is simple, but only once you know how the system works.

Garage Doors Explained answers two questions about every part of a garage door: how does it work, and why does it fail. We explain springs and cables, openers, door types and sizes, hardware and seals, safety and upkeep, what usually goes wrong, and when the right move is to call a garage door technician, an electrician or the manufacturer.

What we cover

  • Troubleshooting: doors that will not open or close, noises, stuck and off-track doors, and sensors.
  • Springs and cables: how torsion and extension springs work, signs of failure and why replacement is a professional job.
  • Openers: chain, belt, screw and wall-mount drives, programming, remotes and repair.
  • Doors: types, materials, sizes, insulation, panels and costs.
  • Hardware and seals: tracks, rollers, hinges, locks, weather stripping and bottom seals.
  • Maintenance and safety: checklists, lubrication, the tests every owner should do and child safety.

How we make our guides

  • Diagrams, not stock photos. Our guides are built around simplified illustrations and diagrams that show how a spring balances a door, how a track and rollers guide it, or how an opener senses an obstruction. Treat them as explanatory drawings rather than exact replicas of any specific brand, model or local design.
  • Safety first. A garage door is the heaviest moving object in many homes, and its springs and cables hold a great deal of stored energy. We never give steps to change, tighten or release springs or cables, and we say plainly when a job belongs to a trained technician.
  • Plain language. We explain the technical terms the first time we use them and back the numbers with sources we have read.
